Helene Aust is a wealthy, twice-divorced resident of Stuttgart in her mid-to-late fifties; she has two grown children of her own and three stepchildren across both marriages. She's witty, charming, fluent in German and English and gradually learning bits and pieces of Russian from Daniil, who she puts up in a comfortable apartment nearby her home. They have an Understanding.
Ivan and Daniil met in 1917, shortly after Daniil's untimely demise, and have been inexplicably close friends ever since. Daniil thinks Ivan's wife is a menace to sanity, but tactfully refrains from commenting on this as a general rule.
